Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Indiana: It has been found that a circular area is to the square on a line equal to the quadrant of the circumference, as the area of an equilateral rectangle is to the square of one side.
(Section I, House Bill No. 246, 1897)

Alas, only one house of Indiana passed this.

Best I can make out -- They believed that it is equally true that

the area of a square (equilateral rectangle) is the square of one side (a true thing)

the area of a circle is the square of one fourth of the Circumference (not quite so true).

The last one seems to be saying that [ ¼ 2 π r ]² is the way to figure a circle's area. So, we end up with [ ½ π r ]², which is ¼ π² r². We have since figured it to be πr², so this is only valid if Indiana figured that π was 4. Odd, that.

This has nothing to do with my paper. Nothing odd about that at all.
