Friday....
Went to Sapporo last night with da elf, and she is happy. Good food. And, yes, to the parents that read this journal's public entries -- if you come down, we can go. Just set up a time. You've got plenty, what with being retired and all.
Da firfey did *NOT* make the gifted program. Got her scores back, and apparently she was underwhelmed at the test and didn't try to pass it. So, there you have it. We'll need to consider private school to keep her out of the hell of public dumbing-down-to-average that happens in some schools here, but that money is going to hurt our budget. Ugh.
We've started playing with TurboTax. Looks like we overpaid again. I'd like to stop doing that, but we've not yet been able to stabilize our withholding. I'm hoping that me having a steady job, and da elf likewise, might help.
On my prayer list: one child is doing better, and one is very probably going to die. I always have a shake of faith when these things happen, and I'm going through it again. I think it is the lie that "God is so good" that does it -- The Bible says that God just *IS*, and that good and evil are perceptions, but Fluffy Christians have forgotten that God kills babies and vile sinners alike. There is no easy to wrap the brain around a being that is beyond morality, so when the world gets depressing my worldview follows it.
Philosophy -- best contemplated with a beer in one hand, and a shot of whiskey in the other.
ETA: Oh, and we went to see Shiny-2 (Underworld). Good costumes, and the story was kinda neat, too.

There are also usually other requirements. Geni missed getting in not because of her scores (she most definitely qualified in the visual/spatial intelligence area), but due to their rules about "achievement" (past grades).
Of course, many gifted kids are so bored or the standard curriculum is so unsuited to their learning styles that they don't perform well, which means that requirement was stupid in the first place. (Gwinnett County system).
If it's possible, Howard School is great. Some people think it's "just" for kids with learning differences, but it is FAR more than that. I think it's the best school I've seen in terms of paying attention to the individual student's abilities and needs. It seems more expensive than some of the other private schools, but that's because the others hit the family with lots of private tutoring fees if the child needs ANY individual attention at all.
Good luck!
