[livejournal.com profile] elfgirl calls this "Epic Fail".

Apparently the International Astronomers Union decided to solve the problem of what to call Pluto by naming it a plutoid. A plutoid is basically "something out where pluto is that looks like pluto and not the nearby rocks."

Not to be confused with the blutoid, a celestial object on a collision course with a popeyeoid....

What utter nonsense...and ignores the full-on Romanticism of Pluto and Charon as the only proper binary planetoids so far in our solar system...forever locked together, circling in gravational embrace...

...bring back natural Philosophers and let's get some grace back into naming.

I still like Calvin's application of names:

The universe was created by "The Horrendous Space Kablooie", and the large carnivorous (although possibly scavenging) beasts with teeny tiny arms were "Monstrous Killer Death Lizards".

My Very Educated Mother Just Said, "Uh-oh, No Pluto!"

You'll notice the word "Union" in their name. That should explain it all.

Come now, Earthfolk. This decision was clearly driven by the bad polling numbers your astronomers received after their decision to demote Pluto to the status of a dwarf planet in 2006, shortly before PiratePaloozaâ„¢. Your planet's unnatural affection for Pluto is becoming irritating for those of us who know better, for if you must know, "Pluto" is in fact a refueling dump for passing Erebriton Freighters of Klaxta Minor and was voted "Most Likely to Explode" in last year's Spacer News Journal.
