shopping for the holidays...
Dec. 12th, 2008 02:06 pmI know I'm hard to shop for... Anything affordable that I want, I tend to buy. Anything pricy gets saved for, or avoided. I have most of the things I want, or need. And, what's left is associated with hobbies I wish I had time for.
So, to give people ideas of what they can get me for Christmas, should you first win the lottery...
1) Kinetic Scuplture, like the works of David C. Roy. A favorite of mine (sold out) is Whimsy.
2) Camera Equipment. I'm looking at the Canon EOS 50D, but will still need lenses, etc, and that'll take a while to buy.
3) Wordworking equipment like the ShopSmith V. Yes, a massive drill/lathe/rip/saw system. No place for it, but I want one for when I get back into woodworking.
4) Vaccuum-Forming equipment. Because nothing helps design prototype molds quite the same. And, in that vein...
5) Rapid Prototyping 3D printer hardware. Yah, da elf is going to be parking in the driveway, I can tell....
6) A new games-grade laptop that isn't also a desktop-replacement. I don't need the weight, just the power. You know firefox needs at least four cores to be effective, right?
7) iTouch, largest storage size, for my massive music collection. Not that I don't already have an iPod that works fine. I just like the shiny.
8) A Celestron tracking telescope with camera mount so I can attach that EOS 50D. I'm thinking more like the Ultima 2000. I'd be fine with a Meade LX90-ACF, too, if it's hard to find the Celestron.
9) A Naval Cannon, like this one. And, yes, I'd fire it. Powder only, mind you, but that'd be enough.
10) A wall of wine and the racks to hold it all. That'd be about 5000 bottles, and I'd like no more than 6 repeats of any given vintage. Lots of variety is good.
I've left off the SmartCar, the Tesla Roadster, the Panoz Roadster, the Cessna, the 105" flat screen HDTV, etc....
So, I'm pretty easy to shop for, if you don't mind taking out a third mortgage. Otherwise... well, good luck.
Right now I'm expecting socks, and maybe a candy-cane or two. Anything more will be better than I deserve.
